I upgraded my Tektro 275s that came on my bike to Shimano M8000. Night and day difference. Bought them from JensonUSA on sale. Even SLX would be a nice upgrade. I'm using Disco Brake copper-free and ceramic pro pads.
WebDidn't feel safe at all. So I upgraded those to the Tektro HD-M290s. I still used the rear v brakes for almost another 3 years until the pads were starting to wear down to the metal. I hate mechanical brakes with a passion. Can never get the adjustment right. When you try to adjust them so they don't rub, they're too loose.
