WebThe Society was founded in 1839 and originally assistance was given to those shipwrecked and to the widows and orphans of those lost at sea. Today however, while the Society still provides help in the event of shipwreck, its main function is to pay grants to retired seafarers and their widows suffering hardship and loss.
