From the paint effects tab inside visor choose the "hair" folder and then the most saturated red hair there like in the picture below. You can play with other presets as you like but this one is best suited for what i need. Save both versions in separate files. You will also need to ensure that your Low Poly has a UV setup as well.

If you wish to disable smoothing entirely, you can disable the SMT button next to the Divide button in the Geometry palette. This will remove the smoothing effect when subdividing.
