Against human NPCs, the light opener has enough forward momentum to catch a spear-wielder and staggers enough to follow with two heavy attacks for that lovely Bleed effect, then dodge out. I recommend one 1-handed weapon with a shield, one 2-handed weapon, and a bow, I run a sword and shield, hammer, and I always try to get Reach of the Red Mother or a Dragonbone bow as soon as I can.
